Basement Wine Racks Should I keep the wine bottle in a champagne bucket or in a dry place to store it? I think to get a wine rack in my basement or a wine cooler. However, is it bad for the wine cool for long periods of time if you do not plan to open soon? Or does it not matter either way? A wine cooler maintains just the wine at a constant temperature and humidity - I keep one in my kitchen at about 17 degrees. Wine must be stored somewhere wet to avoid drying out the corks and alteration of wine. The location must have good moisture and a temperature around 55 degrees. If you talk about storage, keep in the basement, away from light and dry.
