Current status of organic farming

Organic farming is much more than farming without chemical fertilizers or pesticides and synthetic, it is a holistic approach to the very system of agriculture that restore, maintain and improve economic viability and ecological balance producing non-toxic, food safe and tasty or medicine or dye with natural flavors and colors.

In today's world, most organic producers believe biodiversity since they avoid varieties of genetically modified, whether crops or seeds or plants or animals. They use no chemicals or for soil fertility or pest management, chemical-free, either for growth or protection with the exception of medications that too when the situation is very bad and out of control.

OVERVIEW

Organic farming is now practiced in over 100 countries worldwide. The harmful effects of agrochemicals used to last several decades have changed the minds of consumers in different countries that are ready to buy now or see organic foods with a high premium.

Policy makers are now promoting organic farming for various reasons such as soil health, to support the rural economy and creating better environment. The total area is estimated to organic 26 million hectares with 61 standards and 364

certification bodies.

The global organic market is estimated at 26 billion U.S. dollars.

The certified organic area in India is estimated at 2.5 million hectares but the non-certified is much more.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Organic farming is practiced in India since the beginning of agriculture in this country and continued as such until the Green Revolution was introduced into this country in the mid-sixties.

There is a brief mention of organic farming in ancient literature like the Rigveda, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and Kautilya Arthshastra etc.

Sir Albert Howard was the first farmer in the industry that has been brought to India by the British to teach Indian farmers use agrochemicals, but it ended up in learning organic farming with Indian farmers, developed the Indore process and has continued to build the bridge between fungal symbiosis humus in the soil and the sap of plants through mycorrhizal associations.
