Bottled water is your bottled water? On the bottom of my bottle of water there are a number in a triangle, what does that mean?
The number inside the triangle is a plastic identification number representing what chemical was used to make plastics. For example, if you see a 1 which represents PETE (polyethylene terephthalate) or a 7 is polycarbonate (which contains bisphenol A), which are the chemicals most commonly used in water bottles. This articles intention is to provide a basic overview for # 1 and # 7 and chemicals are not understood by any means. I invite the reader to research each of these new chemicals.
Can I reuse my plastic water bottle?
Water bottles with the # 1 (PETE) are disposable! PETE infiltrates into the solution in the second use. The more you reuse PET bottles over the chemical you ingest (Aquafina and Dasani are made from Pete). Number 7 is rather stable at first, but to wash and keep using the pores of polycarbonate plastic to begin leaching and the more you wash and fill in as you are ingesting. I recommend not to use bottles made with # 7 (Nalgene is made of polycarbonate).
What is the health problem associated with chronic exposure to these chemicals?
Pete is thought to be possibly carcinogenic, studies have been reported to support this claim. I'm not yet sold on the exact condition, but it causes drinking small amounts of chemicals can not be good for anyone. Polycarbonate on the other hand it shows health problems in a variety of ways. Bisphenol A (contained in the polycarbonate) was first introduced on the market in the 1930s as an estrogen for a pharmacological use. It is now used in our plastic and has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system, fetal development, cause reproductive abnormalities and has been shown to improve cell growth of human breast cancer. These are diseases, states that everyone must try to prevent.
Are there any bottles that are safe?
The SIGG bottles are coated on the inside with resin which have proved resistant to degradation and does not release harmful chemicals. These bottles are considered the gold standard when it comes to reusable containers.
